Setting Up a Trigger in Zapier

Setting Up a Trigger in Zapier
A trigger is the event that starts your Zap. Setting up the right trigger ensures your automation runs at the right time — whether it’s a new email, a form submission, or a task created in Momentum AMS.

Choosing Your App and Event

When creating a new Zap in the Zapier editor, the first step is to select the app that will provide the trigger. Search for the app you want to connect, such as Gmail, Slack, or Momentum AMS.

From there, choose the event that will activate the Zap—for example, “New Email,” “New Form Submission,” or “New Task Created.”

Connecting Your Account

Zapier needs permission to access the chosen app. If you’ve already connected the app before, you can select your saved account from the dropdown menu. If not, use + Connect a new account and follow the prompts to securely log in.

Once your account is connected, Zapier will be able to monitor it for the selected event.

Customizing the Trigger

Some apps allow additional options to refine when the Zap should run. For example:

  • In Gmail, you may choose to trigger only on emails with a specific label.

  • In form apps, you can select which form should be monitored.

These options help you filter events so that your Zap only runs when it’s relevant.

Testing the Trigger

After selecting the trigger app, event, and options, Zapier will run a quick test. It pulls in a recent item—such as an email, form submission, or task—to confirm that the connection works.

If no data is available, you may need to add a new item in the trigger app (such as sending yourself a test email) and try again.

Confirming and Proceeding

Once Zapier successfully finds data from the trigger, you’ll see a preview of the sample information. This confirms your trigger is set up correctly.

At this point, you can continue to the next step in your Zap, where you’ll define the action—what Zapier should do when the trigger event occurs.

Final Thoughts

Setting up a trigger is the first building block of every Zap. By carefully choosing the app, event, and any filter options, you ensure your automation runs smoothly and only when it should.
